$500 from my mom. It's a ton of money for the birthday, which I felt bad about her giving, and I tried to give it back. She has never accepted any returns on her gifts. But it really is hard for me to accept it graciously, when I'd rather she just uses it on herself. That would be the best birthday gift.

Invite her without any reason in a restaurant. You drive and invite. Maybe as a surprise so she dont see it. You pay and then you leave and say - all is paid, let's go home. Or go with her to a place she wants to go but cannot alone. Time is so much more valuable than money.

I think it was 50 bucks. My father forgot my birthday and when I went to see him he pulled out a Ulysses S. Grant to give me. Afterwards I went to a bar by myself and got drunk and thought about how much i missed my girlfriend that lived 1500 miles away.

@Unycorn obviously I have a lovely family and my parents are actually really well off and we live nicely. We just never had this system of giving allowances or birthday money or anything because it's weird. We don't need cash at hand and parents are willing to buy whatever we want and is needed (not just anything). I get gifts for birthday like last time we went to a Chinese restaurant.

People have different needs, cultures, and customs. What feels weird, or cold to one person might feel like kindness to another.
