Have you ever given someone back their gift?

I chose to give back a substantial gift to a fellow who showed me he couldn't be trusted to have my back or to be there for me when I needed him. Word got out (though I was discreet in telling him to take it back) and suddenly everyone is telling me I'm crazy for giving it back. Just take it and ignore the guy.

But I don't want him to have the satisfaction of bragging (which he does) that he gave me something substantial and I just don't appreciate it. I never asked him for gifts or anything material at all. I just liked spending time with him and hearing his opinions on things, or just sitting around laughing. But clearly we're on different planets with that.

What would you do? Keep the gift? I won't do it. It will be a constant reminder of him that I don't want.

If someone gives me something and then decides to be awful about it then that's their problem not mine. They are WELCOME to waste their time and energy on it

No but I’ve attempted to. My ex gifted me a ring that belonged to his aunt that had passed and a pricey necklace/bracelet set that was his moms. when we broke up I tried returning them but he flat out refused to take them so now they collect dust in one of my jewelry boxes

In that situation, I probably would have gave it back it too. I wouldn't want him to have something over me especially when I never asked for anything.

I had to think about this. I dont think I ever have. I have brought back to the store gifts that where the wrong size but never returned it to the gift giver.

I never stay silent in the face of disrespect. I broke up with him and threw the necklace he gave me into the sea.

He was rude to me, he swore at me. I didn't resort to violence, I just yelled and told him to leave, to cut all ties with me.

I can understand why you would give back the gift. I never had to give back a gift but if I had somebody who betrayed me Iwould probably do the same thing you did.

I have never been in the position where I had to do that.
