Depends what the product is.
I don't buy brand names ever unless it represents great value - I'm well aware of the issues with a lifetime in marketing / sales..
So never ever trust a brand , unless there is a genuine reason to do so , there never is in the rag trade for example.
My wealth creation purchases = Hell yeah , and I will buy better than anyone , this includes , land , property , listed products , ETFs , large purchases of merit.
It needs research of course.
Food , I know all the prices , the reasons to spend or not spend , value not waste , few can do this as well as myself , never entrust this gig to someone who ( thinks ) they understand value. I buy nothing processed , or very little.
Therefore , if it's just fun cheap sht , it's no problem., I can take a change , I'm in country where if I don't like it I can gift it to another who will really appreciate it , this sector I don't consider wastage , and often ( more often than not ) I'm surprised to the positive , this works with the likes of TEMU and Lazarda , little point researching , but it kinda fun.
Now another total rip off area is serious retail jewellery, say serious from 2k Aud upwards , I have great contacts here , so I can get a vastly better diamond in whatever setting required , with personalisation, without spending more create vastly better.
I figure you have four types of sales assistants:
- Those who don't know and don't care
- Those that do know and don't care: they just want to make a sale in minimum time and effort
- Those who do know and don't care: they just want to make a sale with the largest markup
- Those that know and care.
Which person are you talking to?
Better to research yourself if it matters.
I use consumer reports. Getting online recommendations are misleading because most folks have only used the product for a few months. I want to hear from longterm users.
Tide iiquid is a great detergent but I changed to Persil because of Consumer Reports. It costs a little more, but you use less and clothes come out clean.
I do so much research before buying a product, depending on what it is and how important it is to me. I like being given recommendations, but I’ll even research those.
If I don't particularly care about the product, then I'll just go with the most highly recommended one.

I'll admit... I reserch the shit out of any buy I make. But to justify that... I don't buy cheap shit... I'm usually making like a $200K purchase or more. I let the wife buy all the cheap shit like food and gas.
I research the shit out of anything I get before I get it. Because of that, I rarely ever get something I regret buying. It happens occasionally when I make a mistake when researching something though
I look at online reviews but I'm skeptical of those. I also look at the consumer reports website for info.
I conduct extensive research on everything.
I do both, and more... research, review... and ask others I know who know better too
I like to research about the product before investing in it.
It depends on the product. If I was buying a car I'd do a lot of research, make a short list (and also a long list) and take some test drives.
I do a lot of research and give other products a good looking over..
Well yes I would like to be shown personally, but if there’s nobody around to show me, then I’ll have to do research to learn more
I will try looking for me but would take recommendations
I research it and look at feedback. If it's mostly positive, I'd buy it.
Both. I research whats been recommended to me. I hardly purchase after doing so!
The product is usually some sort of food, and I'm the type who would like to eat the food.
Research and reviews.
I research a lot.
I follow my instincts
I watch videos on it and look at reviews.
Research
I research reviews first
