How do you girls see programmer guys?

If I hear that she's a soldier or policewoman or something, it gives me a feel like "wow she's cool" or something like that.

How bout the geeks for you?

I know that they have bad reputation sometimes that they are antisocial, don't talk, fat, or ugly.

Others say positive: smart,they think, they fix stuff.

What's your point of view? What's the first idea that comes to your mind when he says "I'm a programmer"?

(ps. yes, I study to be a programmer.. but be honest :D )

Girls don't know shit about programmers, let's be real. What they know is just the stereotypical crap. I think you don't know the programmer type unless you're in that field or you've dated one. I'm in mechanical engineering and I have friends in software, I've also dated a guy in software before. My boyfriend's roommate is in sofware engineering too, so we were having a discussion about that last night. I told him "Hey, do you agree on this: There are 2 types of sofware engineers. There are the ones that are shy, socially awkward - basically gaming and programming all by themselves all the time. And there's the rest of them - regular guys that actually go out and party with people". He said I summed it up pretty accurately. He's in the latter category. He goes out every week, takes part in the programming eng games, has friends, etc. Doesn't own a raspberry pie, doesn't code in teams for days in a row for competitions as some do, but he has 2 cats and is indeed a strange character. He's definitely datable and doesn't freak me out BUT you gotta keep in mind that I've been around that type of guy for a while, so not much can creep me out in the engineering world anymore.

As for the bad rep. The antisocial and don't talk/ ugly rep is there for a reason but of course, it doesn't apply to all programmers. The thing though that girls don't realize most times is that this type of guy, the stereotypical guy, isn't the guy they know in real life. Not many girls outside of engineering actually hear about these people because they ARE indeed computer rats and they spend all their time by themselves or with fellow software students. Girls DO think all guys are like that, but that's just cause they don't know anything about thie real deal Most of the software guys I know are party animals, very social creatures always up for a night in at someone's place with the programming crew. These people ARE datable and all, but girls wouldn't know beforehand that they are programmers, that's the nuance.

So now, if someone tells me he's studying in programming, I think that this guy is either a weirdo (isn't, since we're having conversation already) OR a regular social guy with geeky software-related habits (cookie-clicker hacking, owns a raspberry pie, saves up to buy a more powerful desktop, has a few gaming consoles, fan of sci-fi movies, etc). The only issue with those things is that girls aren't usually interested in them at all and don't relate to any of those hobbies so you gotta have something else going on and some good social skills to compensate and make her interested in you. Humor is important too, as lots of programmers are perceived to be very boring and stiff people. It's true to a certain extent but at the other end, some of the wackiest, funniest guys I know are in software too so...

Well I was married to one - he was great for fixing computer issues but tended to be not quite as good with everything else. He tended sometimes to be a little too pragmatic for his own good instead of thinking with his heart when it came to us which is why it largely ended. Had a hard time separating work from personal life after a few years. But that was him and not you.

I think "nerd' but in a good, cute way. It's neat, cos I am useless with technology.

But in the end it doesn't really matter. It's just not a negative.
