What culture did you grow up in?

Did you grow up in a culture differing from the stereotypical western lifestyle?
What are your thoughts about that particular culture/ religion.
I grew up Amish..left when I was 21 but still admire the people and lifestyle.

What is the stereotypical western lifestyle? My parents didn't raise me in a particular culture or religion. They encouraged my to always explore everything. They bought me microscopes and science type stuff like that as a kid to encourage critical thinking skills. My parents pretty much took a hands off approach when it came to cultural and religious stuff. When it came to discipline and treating others they way you want to be treated they were pretty big on that. Hobbies, likes, and dislikes were all up to us to discover on our own. They believed in the child learning things on their own the hard way type philosophy haha

Good question. I guess the one reflected to the rest of the world via Hollywood although that is not a true representation of many westerners.

I grew up in American (Southern) culture. BTW, do Amish farmers use modern farm machinery, like tractors?

Cool..most Amish use horses for farm work. We were a bit more modern and used tractors for farming, horse and buggy for everything else lol

I grew up in a typical Canadian household? Didn't really have a culture, we are Caucasian and didn't go to church too often so I guess it was as normal as you get? by the way I am completly fascinated with Amish people and the culture. The way you all live boggles my mind. It's very interesting stuff

Sounds pretty normal :) yeah Amish is a great way to grow up. But it's not for everyone..

To me culture and religion are two different things. I grew up in a Pakistani somewhatish Muslim house. I love everything about Islam and only some parts of my culture.

For example in the Islam world, morality, loyalty, a sense of family etc..
