What does it mean when a guy thinks you hate him?

So many happened between me and this guy (and it was mostly kinda bad) but I already forgived him and forgot about it. But last week ago I was in my computer, he suddenly did a joke about drinking bleach and i kept staring at because I thought it wasn't very funny. And he said to me
"Don't worry, I know you want to see me dead but I'm not going to die too soon"
Me: Why I want you dead?
Him: Because you hate me, since the day I almost killed (it was a accident in PE class, he landed on me and I fell down and my head hit the ground.)
Me: I never hated you, even if I was in hospital and needed a surgery I would never had blamed you (because it was a accident).
And then like his face had the mixture of shy and happiness. It kinda looked cute to me.
But what does it mean?
