A researcher is interested in the question of how many words someone can retain in short-term memory. He has 4 groups whom he shows 4 (group 1), 6 (G2), 8 (G3), and 10 (G4) words to, respectively. Immediately after showing the words to the group, he asks them to recall as many of the words as they can. In this study, what is the independent, and what is the dependent variable?

The independent variable is the varied number of words given to each group (i. e. 4, 6, 8, etc.), and the dependent variable is how many of those words they recall.

I think he should consider using the same group for all four tests though, because otherwise he may be introducing more variables. Some people have better short-term memory than others. For example, if group 4's people are better on average than the other groups at retaining the words, it would skew the results.

The first group receives 40 minutes of ultraviolet light 3 times a week, the second group receives 20 minutes of ultraviolet light 3 times a week, and the third group receives no ultraviolet light. Tell me which group (s) were in the control group, and which were in the experimental group. (You can simply delete the incorrect answer for each group.
