Would you rather die of cancer or Alzheimer's?

Question

Saw the movie Still Alice last night. I didn't want to see it but my friends did, so I went along with it.

The character has Alzheimer's and raises she would rather die of cancer than Alzheimer's. So if you could choose only between the two, would you rather die of cancer or Alzheimer's?

I'm not going to be more specific about cancer, and I'm well aware it comes in all kinds of varieties with different symptoms. For the purposes of this question, assume the cancer is 100% fatal.

either way they are horrible diseases. ... I can't say for sure. ... my great grandmother had althimerz it was so heart breaking seeing someone I loved so much deteriorate like that over years. She was the most amazing, loving, sweetest, generous, caring, beautiful person I've ever met. her heart was pure gold.. it was to the point she couldn't remember who we were I cried every time I seen her. in the end she suffered a mini stroke on father's day 2009. June 29,2009 was the day my son turned 8 month's and the day she went to a better place. . I love and miss her everyday. I try to be a better person because of her

I say cancer. I say that because I wouldn't want to not remember things. If my life is going to end I want to remember all the wonderful people who were in my life and made me who I was, and all the amazing things I went through, I would want to be able to remember the fun times I had with my friends and family and the times I got Introuble and the even the worst times of my life, and all the embarrassing moments. All of those thins make me me and I don't want to forget who I am before I die.

Having lost five people very close to me to cancer I have experienced it first hand up and through their last breath. What kept me sane and able to cope was the fact that they still had their memories, and wits about them until their final moments. I cannot fathom the pain of watching somebody die who has lost their memory of who I am or their life around them. I would choose to die of cancer instead.

I understand the idea of not remembering and feeling alone as being bad. But I watched my wife suffer through immense pain in her fight with cancer I watched helplessly as she cried because the pain was so ferocious. When the end was imminent, she went into hospice and was able to get enough pain killing medicine to alleviate the pain, but it was more than they could give someone who was not within days of death. Stand and helplessly watch as a loved one suffers so much pain, and losing one's memories does not seem so bad.

Cancer is such an insidious disease. I've lost a few people to it that I was quite close with, and their experiences were just awful.

With that said, I think cancer might be the lesser evil here. Throughout their illnesses, my family members will still able to interact with loved ones I'm a meaningful way, and they got to say their goodbyes. I imagine that'd be better than succumbing to Alzheimer's.

I may be in the minority, but at least with Alzheimer's you don't even realize you are losing your mind; it breaks the hearts of all those around but you yourself in the grips of the disease don't even know (after it advances). It would be a totally free way to pass vs all the agony I have witnessed with cancer.

Since my risk of cancer is creeping up, I may die of it anyway. I'm at risk of a lot right now. I'd rather know that I can enjoy my life while I have it rather than not even knowing my family. Although, cancer is the devil's best friend. It has killed too many young lives for me to succumb to it as long as I have the least bit of a choice.

Maybe i would rather die of cancer, i would feel even more defeated if i would have no memorys to comfort me... if i was empty i could not go on. i know if u die of alzhaimer u even forget to breath, to me that is so cruel...

The idea of dying from mental decline (especially slowly and steadily in the case of Alzheimers) scares me more than any physical pain or suffering that cancer could bring.

Cancer. I would rather from a physical condition that I fought against and lost but still have my memory intact then a mentality condition, in which I lose all my memory, even my name.

I'd rather die of a stroke or heart failure.
If it's between Alzheimer and cancer, I'd prefer cancer: I'd know it's coming and be able to put a final end to it before it gets inhumane. With Alzheimer I won't be able to know it.
