Yeah, people can use it that way if they want. Petite usually just means small or dainty, which is totally possible for tall women. It's definitely a compliment, they must think you have a very nice build. :) The only time it wouldn't make sense is if the boutique people were telling you to shop in the petite section of a clothing store, since that usually refers to height.

Petite also means you're slim, doesn't only have to refer to height.
