It's not a matter of being a sin or not it's causing unnecessary pain to a self with no right or reason but torture is not for any creature because it's a negative act and the universe is like huge body with many cells and when a cell like a human being doing a negative act it start seeing it as a flaw then it fix it to balance it self by making reality of that cell harder sadness comes failure every where you go and luck always seem to run out then it becomes an empty loop you empty your feeling in a negative act like torturing creatures and then you feel more pushed around over and over until you break the loop if you even realized that there is a loop and the same thing he does with positive act things would seem much easier and smooth in your reality that's how it works his job is to make sure everything in the universe gets exactly what his giving in one way or another so technically what they mean with a sin it's just stuff that if you do them you will harm yourself in an indirect way you might not even realize it happening so yep bugs tortured to death is definitely under that category

Killing animals for a purpose is one thing, but if your sole intent is to inflict as much pain as humanly possible to one of God's creatures then yes, I'd say that's sinful beyond any shadow of a doubt. It is not the worst thing in the world and I probably wouldn't ground my kids for it but an adult should know better and should be caring for them.
