You can take a test the moment your period is late. However, sometimes the hormones that the test detects aren't high enough, so it's better to do a second test at least 2 days after the first test.

Everything you read says a week, but I only ever wait two days. Tests nowadays are pretty accurate. If you don't get your period after you take the test, wait a couple more days and test again.
