+1 yI think as a species we are fine but our current societies, at least in the west, are in a state of decline. The last time the power balance was shifting this quickly was in the events leading up to WW1 with the collapsing Ottoman and Austrian Empires. I dont think people realize what kind of tinderbox we are sitting on in the power struggle in the middle east right now.
Never mind AI :p123 Reply- +1 y
I think the moral decline argument is bs as historically it gets brought up whenever any catastrophe happens, the black death being the starkest example. But financial and global influence are in decline here.

Rome fell because all the valuable provinces were in the East next to the Parthians who were their main rival so that's where their main energy was going. Plus hundreds of years of fighting various Germanic tribes on the Norther Border got expensive. The Roman Empires new capital of Constantinople didn't fall until 1453.
Currently my concern is that as the United States loses its control of world politics it will increasingly resort violence and risk conflict with other great powers. Currently they are on a path of alienation and at least verbal hostility. - +1 y
On top of that whoever develops general AI first will render their opponents military obsolete by technological advancements in weeks to months. Currently Russia, China and the United States are developing it and there are increasing signs of this turning into another arms race. If that happens it will likely be released without as thorough a vetting process. Not to mention it puts the nations perceived enemies in a position where they have to win within a week or lose everything if a conflict could develop at any point in the future.

Rome fell because of it's people's immorality... same with all civilizations. The people are what make it up.
https://www.rome.info/history/empire/fall/ - +1 y
This doesn't explain it all but it's quite true.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHrPXgzoUCQ - +1 y
It states that hookers at parties were one of the main reasons for the decline of the empire... Also you're applying a christian concept of morals to a pre christian culture. Christianity didnr gain a foodhold in the empire until 325ad, right around the time it went into a serious state of decline.
I think there's a stronger argument for christian values breaking rome than pagan ones. - +1 y
Yes but puritanism is a newer concept. Drunken debauchery was already a regular part of life well before that ie Saturnalia, the Eulisinian mysteries and countless other, at the time, mainstream public events where that behaviour was encouraged and in fact the norm. It was more failed military campaigns and losing legions than hookers and wine Im afraid.
- +1 y
They had child sex slaves, they'd collect them on the trash heaps where they were thrown. It's not just about hookers. They were monsters and there can't be a rise in civilizations, in knowledge, in consciousness, in arts and sciences with people like that. Civilizations like that collapse. That's simply the way it goes.
- +1 y
Everyone had child sex slaves back then and until disturbingly recently it was common practice. In western society it was a common part of the apprenticeship system since greece and likely earlier.
There were mosters who lived then and monsters are drawn to power so its no surprise all Empires deal with corruption.
Not saying what they were doing is morally acceptable, just that what we define as morally acceptable changes with the ages except for a few hard rules like no killing family.
Also I've read lots of historical reports and the like and dont recall anything about piles of dead babies aside from a smear campaign they ran on the Pheonecians claiming they did. As a whole the romans thought killing babies was amoral, it was one of their issues with the druids. - +1 y
True about today its more disturbingly widespread than most people realize. Please provide references to the piles of dead babies in the trash, I would like to see it.
- +1 y
Those babies died of disease not murder says so right in the article over 30% were from meningitis. Plus there are finds like that in all time periods not just for periods of relative stability/prosperity that leads to extravagant wealth. So the morality equals societal decline theory is pretty bust in my opinion.
- +1 y
I dont see that anywhere in either article but it does say the babies were likely the babies of slaves which was why they were afforded little respect and goes on about Roman custom to not consider a child a person until 10 days after birth due to high infant mortality rates.
It seems harsh but with historical context isn't that weird.
Also the first one at least was from 150bc before the Romans even conquered the area. So again this weakens the amorality equals societal collapse case even further.
I think Im pretty done with this back to forth. Its pretty clear you have a concept you want to shoehorn history to fit and the pesky archaeological record keeps making that difficult for you. - +1 y
Ancient origins is not a legitimate source of historical information and there's no reference to sex slaves in tbe other less questionable article.
Its clear your committed to believing your idea and aren't open to other information. Im done here for now, I've presented my point as well as I need to.

+1 yOf course humanity is doomed. Everything physical is doomed. Doomed to become a uniform distribution of particles at a low temperature. The only hope for any of us is in the nonphysical, which is of course being driven out of societal thought by materialism just at the time it's most needed. Now, the question "is humanity evil" is totally different. No. Humanity is not evil. Humanity is corrupted good. So fight the corruption and protect the goodness where you find it, and things will turn out fine. Just not for our bodies. Those will be dust within one cosmic moment.

There have already been many many cases of hacks/leaks. Someone asked me before they hacked Ashley Madison, if I was on there. Of course I wasn't... but that is just one example. There are many... and many more coming. There is a tor backdoor as well.

I mean maybe another world war. But not all of humanity doomed because of people on the web.02 Reply- +1 y
The smart people would notice and drop their phones. And the other guys who were fighting would have half their army stuck in their phones too then. If there's a decent fighting force to go to war with. That means there's someone out there not on their phone. And there's someone else out there not on their phone who called for them.

whats so horrible about porn and video games that make you lose hope for humanity? we like fun. we like pleasure. doesn't mean we're all shallow, one-dimensional doofs.

its arousing, and if ur alone, serves you well. plenty of lovely people watch it.

i get that its fake but i dont see anything wrong with homemade stuff.
- +1 y
then show me, enlighten me astraea about why it makes people so nasty. even if its nasty on its own, sure, debatable, but sure. humans aren't perfect, but we aren't on a quest of evil either
- +1 y
Porn is built on Kinsey and Hefner. They both were involved with pedophilia. There is human trafficking involved, drugs, tarnished life-long reputations, sex addictions, rape, etc etc.
You can deny it all you want but I'm sure you wouldn't brag about your family members being in porn. That isn't a life you would want for them... yet you support it with every view because you need to get off. Pathetic. - +1 y
i never said i support i said i dont see anything wrong with homemade stuff. my point was think i dont think people watching are horrible, ignorant maybe, but not horrible. doesn't guarantee a stamp saying "shit person".
- +1 y
I dont tho? If i do, its homemade.
- +1 y
Your problem is with the industry, whats wrong with homemade stuff?
- +1 y
I dont think there's any human trafficking involved in homemade stuff lmap
+1 yNope. I think it's rather stupid to judge humanity from the internet.
19 Reply- +1 y
Wrong!!. Only half, 53 percent of the world population have access on the internet. Further breakdown of that composition, half of that users are from Asia. In China alone they have their 'own' internet due to restrictions. Furthermore, the usage of internet is largely different from region to region and tends to be more segregated. Example YouTube videos serving are catered for certain market. Say what's popular in Mexico wouldn't even be in India etc...
I presume you are from America or Europe or somewhere in the West, It is far more likely to see things related to your region, interact with people from the same country or region because the Internet you have, would cater things that are relevant to you. So chances of seeing your 'view of the humanity' from the internet are largely in the bubble of the Western World. - +1 y
Public access internet, private access. It's all part of the overall internet usage. Fact is not majority of the world population is on internet.
No, I haven't to the countries I had mentioned but that has nothing to do with it.. but the point im making is it absolutely stupid to judge and convict humanity to be doomed just from the internet just as saying I'm expert and get Indian people and it's culture and customs just from researching it on from Internet without even being there and interacting with them. - +1 y
I didn't even use Wikipedia... Ah yes 51 percent. Top of the Google search right? The difference is I took the stats from the updated information as of 2018. 51 percent was from 2015.
- +1 y
I don't have the inclination nor desire to look into the methodology of a statistical analysis done on 7.6 billion people at the moment since I haven't slept all night... but hey, we gotta have faith in science right? Mention a study and you're gold. lol
