Who would win in a fight: Muhammad Ali or John L Sullivan?

Did some rereach or stuff and came across John L. Sullivan and apparently he was one of the best old timey boxers ever. So then the thought of could he beat Ali popped up.

personally I think John would win because he’s been in over 400 fights (including bare knuckle) while ali was in I think like 50-60 fightshowever Sullivan wasn’t big on actually training for most of his career. he was actually rather “large” when he died.

So who do you think would win?

Ali had a longer reach. i guess i'd have to know more about Sullivan but if he couldn't get in on Ali i'd think Ali would win by his jab. It all comes down to conditioning and Sullivan looks like he was just a brawler. Also Ali's mouth overshadows the fact that he could take a lot of punishment.

@cavmanier I was never a fan of boxing but my father was and i grew up in the Kid Dynamite days Iron Mike Tyson. I'd like to have seen Ali and Tyson fight in their primes

That would have been an awesome fight. I think Ali gets the biased "feel good" support from society because they think he's such a great person. I never seriously watched Ali's fights but Tyson became the youngest heavy weight champion ever I think after being in his first fight a few years earlier. He only realized he could fight after protecting himself from being mugged in NYC. Tyson was the most dominant fighter I've seen though. He admitted he got cocky later on in life and would drink instead of train so of course he fell apart. He may have had the most talent of any boxer.

Ali boxed in a more modern and informed time where he was better trained.

Kimbo Slice got in fights all the time but got destroyed by professional fighters. I have been in numerous fights but I wouldn't stand a chance against a trained professional.

Also, he was a professional fighter. He was champion in bare knuckled and whatever boxing they had then.

Between the two in their prime, Ali easily if it were a boxing match. Too fast and too well-trained.

In a brawl? There are thousands of guys who would obliterate either one. Pretty much any high black belt in MCMAP would.
