Sure it can happen in real life, I know people that follow orders and directions from a higher up and never question them. The military is built on a chain of command, a private will almost always follow the orders of a superior officer, if that officer out ranks his own company commander.

Most military's do not want a thinkers in the lower ranks, they want the rank and file to follow orders with out question.

Yes. Armed forces around the world are working on developing AI technology and other technologies, so that humans won’t need to go into battle. I guess our society will need to determine if ‘clones’ are to be considered humans or a non-entity.
