What is the weirdest thing that has happened to you?

I was in this little youth group for knuckleheaded boys when I was like 13 lmao, and we were taken on a train trip to New York City. The group leader was an Amtrak mechanic, plus he did odd jobs for some local businessmen who would gift him things or just give him cash, whatever. So he got us free train rides from Boston to NYC and back, and one of his jobs had gotten him tickets for the Broadway musical “Cats.”

So basically we went down dumb early at like 5 AM, rolled into Grand Central Station about 10, and we just went on a full day trek around the city. Saw the Statue Of Liberty, Ellis Island, went to the observation deck of one of the Twin Towers, got pizza in Little Italy, went to Coney Island in Brooklyn…we got a lot done. Then we went to Cats in the evening, that was fine, but I’m not really into theater. We closed out the night by Central Park at a fancy ice cream place called Rumpelmayer’s that was either part of or next door to the St. Moritz Hotel and I remember I had dope parfait.

So…we were supposed to catch a train back to Boston at like 2 AM, but this time out across the river in Newark, NJ. We took the PATH train over there and I was pretty much out on my feet by the time we boarded the train to Boston, I had been up since 3 AM the day before, and on short sleep.

We settled into our seats on the train, we took up two rows of three seats. I was in the window seat, two of the other kids to my right. Two more kids and the group leader in the row across the aisle. I remember the seats were blue, with matching curtains on the windows. I fell asleep almost instantly, and woke up to the sun in my face. I look to my right, and my friends weren’t there. I look across the aisle, they’re all gone too. I stood up and went to look for them, I figured they were in the club car where you could buy food. I walk all the way down there, but they weren’t in there. I walk back down the train, no sign of them anywhere. Eventually I reached the front car without seeing them. I went back to my seat, confused. While I’m trying to figure it all out, I notice something…. the curtains were gone. As I noticed that, I saw that the seats were RED! I swore they were blue when I got there! A brief positive moment…. someone left $32 dollars in singles in a stack down the side of the unoccupied seat in front of me, and when a new passenger got on and sat down, I knew it was up for grabs, so I took it. $32 in 1992 money was a small fortune at 13. I knew I wouldn’t starve lmfao.

So at this point I’m starting to worry, or at least knew it was beyond my 13 year old’s jurisdiction. I found the conductor and explained my situation, which I didn’t even really understand. He was sort of looking at me crazy, like “wait…so you woke up in a different seat and you can’t find your group?” I dropped our group leader’s name since he was an Amtrak employee but this guy didn’t know him. Anyway, he tells me to go sit and he’ll figure it out.

Long story short, TO THIS DAY I can’t tell you why I ended up in another seat. My only plausible explanation is sleep-walking or maybe getting up to go to the bathroom but not remembering it and just sitting down somewhere else. But the gist of it is, however I got there, where I sat was on a totally different car, and the train had been split in New Haven, CT, and different cars attached to different trains to different places. I was so lucky, I could’ve ended up going to Baltimore, Philadelphia, or even as far as Chicago depending where I had sat back down, but thankfully, I ended up head towards Boston, just via a different route that would arrive an hour and a half later. It was fine, they were able to radio the other train and contact my group, so they waited in the station back in Boston for me. The leader gave me a little bit of an attitude, which I didn’t appreciate, because it’s not like I chose to do it. But I think he just didn’t understand what happened, and as I said, neither did I, really😂

One day I felt my whole house shake and all of my lawn furniture was knocked over.
It turned out that an oil plant exploded and it was the shockwave travelling through the air. It was bizarre, and if I would've been outside I probably would've been knocked over. Lol.
