Okay, here's my breakdown:
Sword (my "runner up"): Takes some skill, but good for multiple modes of attack: slash, poke, as well as some defensive deflection ability. Limited range.
Spear: I chose this for range. Staying far from opponents keeps the battle less about skill and strength and more about strategy and perseverance. It's also a fairly light weapon, which adds to the stamina factor.
Axe: No defensive properties, short range. Definitely lethal if you get the right blow in, but with others having shields, it's a no go for me.
Flail: I've had one of these, and like nunchaku, they are dangerous to the user as well as not as effective as they seem in terms of damage dealt. A swing bouncing off a shield is just as likely to come back and smack you in the gob.
Brass knuckles: No range, is this a joke? Unless you are a boxer and really sure of your skill... but even then, you want to use punches vs. someone with a sword?
Mace: This is better than a flail, imho. Very simple, requires little skill, and more damaging than a sword in close range. Also faster and easier recovery due to the length and heavy tip.
War Hammer: I like this weapon, you could get the most deadly blows with this, even through a shield blocking you could knock someone down and then finish them off. The one thing I don't like about it is the "commitment factor", you really can't pull back once you're mid swing. (okay, TWO things) The other thing is how heavy it is, if the battle lasts a while, just lugging this thing around is going to wear on me.

Spear for me. I like the long reach. I have no experience with any of these weapons but I was trained in boxing and later kickboxing for a while, and I'm more of an out boxer relying on jabs and footwork than exchanging powerful blows up close. Grappling almost always puts an end to every street fight I've ever been in.
So the spear makes sense to me most. Reach and job, constantly move, and constantly keep a distance. Frustrate the opponent dancing and moving quickly around them while constantly jabbing and attacking and feigning left and right.
If I lose, it'll be because I failed to maintain the distance. But the opponent has to catch me first while I move very quickly and keep jabbing them with the end of that spear.
Mobility, speed, and reach are my primary weapons if I have any chance to survive this fight (which might not be good even so with a spear). I have little chance of winning if I get too close to most guys in this arena who are likely bigger and stronger than me. But they'll have to catch me first, and for that I usually have a major advantage.
If I can have a big shield and have to use a much shorter weapon, maybe a short sword like a gladius. I can relate the shield to the leading arm somewhat to boxing in ways that might translate, and still attack with the shield like a jab. If I have to do in-boxing, that set of equipment seems like something I can relate to where the broad shield gives me large coverage and still a means to defend and jab, and the dominant/rear arm a way to do something analogical to hooks and uppercuts. If I have this type of equipment, I want the weapon in my dominant arm to be small and short since it's designed for close quarters, but I want a huge shield... not some teeny buckler type of thing.
Didn’t know you box @highlyvolatile best exercise in my opinion! If you are very quick and agile you really can light people up. I think in a street fight you can always back up tho n gotta choose your targets carefully everytime you throw a punch you either open up down low or up top. I’d pick below the ear everytime it is open and I’d even try to pry that open if I felt I had it. But eyebrows nose under lip is good to back people up and sting em, if it gets close I’m only going for the shovel up under the chin and hooks under the ear where your jaw connects and is thinnest. I’d never waste a punch on someone’s cheek or head. Someone punched me in the cheek once and I was able to stab him in that tricep before he got his arm back to his body. I was aiming for his lung bad bad bad
@JustiReno One of the difficulties I always found in bar brawls is maybe the whole surprise factor. Out boxing is tough if someone sucker punches us and charges in. All my striking skills (if I have any) become moot when I'm in a headlock or with someone bigger and stronger than me on top. I don't know how to get out of it. It's usually been the case that I can't even land one clean punch in spite of all my training before I'm wrestling and tangled up.
@JustiReno I often wish I took more wrestling or a grappling-based martial art like Judo as a result. I get into a grappling position and I'm totally clueless about what to do.
@JustiReno That's something I need to train a lot! I'm really a shit fighter to be honest if it's in a flurry situation, not like in the ring where the referee tells us when we're supposed to go. I haven't been able to utilize my limited out-boxing skills in real-life situations at all. But with a long spear and pointy tip in hand, in an arena, maybe I could utilize them a little bit better at least without being thrown to the ground immediately.
Yeah street fights kind of scare me too just because you could end up getting jumped stabbed or shot and like you said it’s so easy to end up on the ground. That left hook under the ear is so good tho I’ve tapped people with that and dropped em I wish I had a better left hook. My best punch probably my right straight then left straight
@JustiReno Are you a southpaw? My left hook isn't very good compared to my right. I have a stiff jab but my stance (maybe more adopted from later kickboxing than boxing) wants to lead in heavily with the left and save the right for the closest encounters.
One difference with kickboxing from boxing even though I started from boxing is that with the kicks involved, we tend to want to put that leading arm much forward, and the dominant arm much more backward to swing powerful kicks with maximum torque. It's not quite as tight as boxing. But also more open to takedowns.
No I switch but have a strong preference for my right. The left hook is really so nice you don’t need power at all it’s really a perfect setup leaning in with your left keeping the jab quick then bam when they step in shift on that left toe and push off to from your left falling back into your right opens up that spot right under their ear if you catch them during a step guarantee they not expecting that n falling
@JustiReno Switch way is cool! I think I could have an even better jab if I could switch Southpaw. I've really trained my left but I'm still much stronger and faster with my right, and switching my footwork to be jab-dominant makes a lot of sense to me even though it's so opposite from what I was taught.
@JustiReno... like if I go back to arena analogy for this Q with shield and gladius analogy, try equpping shield on my right (dominant) arm and lead with the shield arm. Then save the left for close encounters. I think that might even be better more often than not. But I haven't tried to mix things up this way.
Straight is really a great punch too, 1,2 is such a good combo as well. Best case clear a block with jab even turn them so their ear is open then follow up with that long power punch from toe hip back shoulder elbow wrist to 2-3 knuckles. Deontae Wilder got so many KOs this way. But yeah I think animals may fight differently I think they can smell your nervous system / blood under your skin. I fought dogs before and the decisions they make are interesting, not every dog is a straight killer probably knows it means certain death. But in this situation with ancient weapons I think keeping distance with a thrust is good I would not try to parry anything close to my body as you’ll probably get cut. Distance and timing will matter here just like a boxing match. If he’s in your distance you should back up or hit him that’s the thing most people get in fights start shoving people I usually back up from people let them chase me
Y'all might be interested in this guy I follow, Travis with Fight Smart. Some of his best stuff is head movement drills, but he always sends out great newsletters with videos he's hunted down and his analysis on a topic.
As for grappling, my main is jujitsu. I started with Danzan Ryu and got into Bjj. I've done a lot of other styles as well, including escrima (pencak silat), TKD, and capoeira among others. My advice to anyone is do martial arts for exercise, physical and mental health. Sure it's good for self defense, but bang for buck and effort, you're better off with a $9 pepper spray, esp. if you are a smaller framed person.
A sword seems like the most tactical option since it is very versatile. You can make clean, efficient cuts with it while it is also good for blocking. Plus, the chances of you missing and hitting yourself are much slimmer when compared to an axe or flail.
just one look at you i think you'd struggle to even lift the axe lol
That's because you can't see the muscle definition in the rest of my body.
im sure you're buff af
I can't tell if that's sarcasm or if you're serious
lol im just joking around. don't take me serious
Okay
It actualy takes quite a bit of skill to use a sword properly. You'd be better off with the mace
@captain_voidwalker I assure you, with the training I’ve had I would be better suited for a sword.

I chose the mace since I'm concerned about slicing my arm by accident or something if I were to use a sword. I can picture myself being a clumsy oaf on the battlefield. I could recoil enough power over my shield and swing at my enemy and hope for the best.
Bludgeoning is my preferred means of killing if it were an option. The crowd may enjoy watching a gladiator's head being crushed.
it would greatly depend on what kind of armors and shields are available... but it would be most likely the axe... the shorter the better, as I've been throwing axes for over 20 years, lol
if this is about survival then I'll definitely throw it at them and not miss the target... rather end it quickly
A good hit with an axe can dent even plate armor and break bones underneath
@MrtoddsWildRide right... and depending on their weapon I could neutralize their good arm, or really mess up their knee, would not be pretty... but it will be effective
Yup. Then get them on the ground and swing up and under
I want a trident and net. I would only pick flail if I was a gnoll.
Blessed Blade Belactus. A holy sword made by the Slends, representing the cross’s toughness. A new demon who emerges from the shadows of darkness isn’t at all worthy of touching it. It’s a shame, you are dead as you are single, since you came all the way to this sacred dojo only to surrender your sad and lonely life.
There is a reason axes were the most used weapon on the battlefield. They hit hard and are demoralizing to be up against.
If used correctly an axe is devastating.
Sword, but actually would want a short sword or dagger, something light weight and nimble.
Mace seems like it has a good weight. gonna fight like a monster
I'd be a spear wielder, then I'd call myself the self proclaimed Dragon Knight, Legendary Hero of the Spear.
Spear comrades rise up!
Anything but D. You know those videos of people beating the crap out of themselves with nunchucks? I can see people doing the same with a Flail.
I'd go with the sword as I was in the fencing team in school, not quite the same as a sabre or foil but close enough.
Spear I guess, it have the longest range so the most practicable to use I can attack before the person can get close to me
the sword would seem the easiest to use. or the ax, but i feel like the sword would still be better.
@JustiReno i haven't watched that actually, but the sword is still probably more practical to use than all of those other weapons
I would pick a sword because of a show I've been watching.

Sword
I would have to go with the spear, so I can keep my distance. Most of the other weapons back then would Of weighed 20lbs or more.
Same. I was between spear and sword but keeping distance is what it's all about. Stick them with the pointy end!
@zeitgeist057 yeah but they have a shield and armor, and with all that plus a sword I think one could really fuck a spear over, parry it and lunge in
@Shamalien don’t forget the weight of those. They are not light.
@Shamalien good point about the shield, but the spear wielder can also dodge back and to the side as must as the sword lunges in, poking all the while. I’m actually a fan of net and trident, but it wasn’t an option. Tangling your opponent up is a huge advantage.
@zeitgeist057 wait till the spear wielder strikes first, parry the spear into the ground then strike
@Shamalien feint with your spear, so that the sword wielder attempts to parry it into the ground, then once he is committed to his swing, send the actual thrust into his face.
I'd want a mace. It has decent range and can do serious damage while still being lighter than a hammer.
Swords. Spear would be cool but what happens once they get past the pointy end of it?
That's why you stick someone with a sword first. Then you have both! :)
The flail I could use it to knock any weapons out of their hand
As long as i can make contact with someones arms or legs ans stab them or remove a limb, so be it
I'm choosing the axe.
Barbarian woman! That's cool. Hefty weapon, deadly strikes.
I would like a hammer. Because i can swing it and fly away like the mighty thor😌.
If i'm forced to take a flail i would most likely kill myself.
The shield
Battle hammer, doesn't take much skill to use and deals good amount of internal damage.
Fencing sword. Fast, needle like, pierce the heart and move on.
I like the sword, it's a good length and can be used for both attack and defence.
If it was spear and net I’d be more inclined to that, but with armor and a shield I’ll take a trusty sword
Either sword or a mace.
The mace I've always been a bit blunt
The sword, like Highlander
Flail so I could keep my distance a bit
Spear is good.
Seek Peace in all areas of your Life
Spear and shield for me.
A spear is what I would be most familiar with.
Sword
None of them
