Are grocery store cashiers allowed to accept tips like in a restaurant?

Female Cashier in a grocery store where I live admits she's underpaid at her job. She looks for a tip from her customers after paying their groceries so she can save up to buy a chocolate bar, something inexpensive. Uh, are cashiers allowed to accept tips? Like, isn't giving tips something you do in a restaurant, cab ride, or barbershop?

I know of no place where tipping grocery store cashiers is customary or expected. If she’s soliciting tips, she’s probably violating store policy if it even has one. The only grocery I know of where tipping is encouraged is the bagger at a military commissary. Baggers there often are not paid wages but work for tips only. But at your grocery, I don’t see what would prohibit a cashier from accepting a tip if you offer one. I just don’t know anyone who tips grocery cashiers.
