Have you seen restaurants do checks like this in the US?

I have never seen this before! I asked for the check and he just brings me this payment device thing, and I have to click the tip amount with him there, which makes it awkward to do anything besides 20%, which is the lowest automatic tip listed too, but I don't love that. Other countries do it this way, but I like the discreetness of US restaurant checks usually.

There is almost always an override that allows you to adjust tip amount. I think the best thing to do in situations like this- and I've personally dealt with many being the GM at many restaurants, is call the proprietor or most senior manager. Write down the date and day and any other relevant details. Tell whomever you spoke with that you dislike the new policy and say exactly what you wrote, It's embarrassing to seem cheap but 20% is a decent tip. Ask him to explain how to customize it. If he is a decent manager he will actually appreciate the call. One of the hallmarks of a good manager is knowing how to "flip" someone who is complaining. I had to deal with this a lot and by listening, acknowledging, and responding to someone is complaining.
It always turned out that these people. would be the most appreciative friendly customers in the future. They are so grateful that someone would finally listen to them. ( I had the authority to tear a check up or discount it heavily. It's not absolutely necessary but whatever power the person listening has would allow you to bring him/her a complimentary drink, bottle of wine dessert, a coupon or receipt for a future 50% off check next time they're here. ( Use a limit written on ). These customers would go out of their way to come say Hi, introduce me to their colleagues, tip you generously often a holiday gift. You do not need to accept any blame or guilt. If he found a piece of broken glass in his salad you probably want to tell your mgr. & you can tell him/her that. If the problem is above your pay grade and you need to kick it up to a supervisor. That's a viable response. Get his # however and follow up in a week or so. That will blow their mind. You will be a hero and have a new friend instead of a pissed off customer. If it;s something specific & you want some ideas feel free to write or DM. I'd like to know how it turns out though I'd bet you that what I told you works.

I've got an MBA but did not learn that from there, an older pro told me and I've used it hundreds of times w/o. as far as I recall, any further negative issues/

Yeah, I've seen that in some restaurants before.

Any time they "suggest" a tip, I always input a custom amount, just on principal. I'm a good tipper, and I always have been, but I'm not going to be baited into tipping whatever they want me to tip, because then it's not a fucking tip. It's almost coercion at that point, and I don't plat that game.

Sometimes I give more than the suggested amount, and sometimes less, but I'll be damned if I let their cheap ass boss dictate how I spend my money.

Yes, although it’s not common. There is usually a “custom” option for the tip amount. I don’t care for those devices either for exactly the reason you stated.
