Someone is breaking into your vehicle, what do you do?

Question

You catch someone breaking into your vehicle. How do you react? This has happened to me three times now. The third, or first, was a smash and grab while I was in a store. They found my stuff on the floor of another nearby stores trash dumpster. I learned when my dog jumped into the glass on the passenger seat…. ) I believe that set precedent to how I’ve reacted since.  The second time I had one of my German Shepherds in public, training, with me. I was exiting a store and saw them at my truck. I yelled loudly and charged them. They said “Sh-t!” and ran. People in the lot just watched. I went after them. My girl thought it was excellent, “My mum is gonna kick your butts!” Yup. Pretty much. Tonight I swore and charged again (only went in for milk. Still in full riding gear.) This bastard spun and walked off quickly. I was already exhausted. Checked my bike and everything was set, so allowed him to.  What do you think your natural reaction would be in a similar situation?

I was 20 years old and heard my alarm go off at night. Ran out with a bat and chased the piece of crap down the block. I wasn't going to hit him but I just wanted to scare him off.

23 years later, if it happened again, I'd just call the cops and let the insurance deal with it. People are so much more crazy than ever. Also at 20, I personally didn't think, what if he has a gun etc.

This is why I'd love to be able to electrify my car so anyone touches it gets stunned... lol. Also have legal immunity so people don't touch others stuff. Well that is a fantasy world that we don't live in.

Ask them what they are doing? While potentially using my stun gun on them, after all they've shown they are a criminal, I'll just say I felt threatened they were going to hurt me. Maybe use some pepper spray for good measure.

One thing I know is that police are useless in these situations, while I support them they don't care about this stuff. The system has zero interest in getting your stuff back or making them pay to fix your broken window. The system says to F off, not our problem. They will happily go after you though if you take the law into your own hands. They have a very high priority on going after vigilante's but low priority on stuff like this.

That is when I wish I knew some people from some certain criminal underworld organizations to go collect restitution from them. They are far better at it than the government is.

I used to play baseball and I was considered an incredible picture by my friends and other people as well and I throw rocks for fun and sometimes air conditioners and I can throw one of the larger window air conditioners over a 35 ft away

I have poor stamina but I can Sprint really fast for a short period of time

Because of runnings I've had before I've practiced punching to such a degree that now I can bend metal by punching it and I'm not talking any thin piece of metal either

I look rather unsuspecting and I'm really good at tricking people into thinking that I'm not paying attention

I took photography in high school

I have long lasting anger issues

And I'm overly protective about my stuff since I've had lost my stuff many times before to fires, floods and other natural disasters as well as theft

Oh yeah and since I was a child I have been getting into rights the largest being a 1 v 6 when I got confronted in my backyard by the usual suspect and and a few of his friends

Theft isn't a option if you're within 40 ft of me and stupid within 60

I prefer to not fight though so I'd likely gather a group and confront him (I used this strategy once but not for theft however im sure I'd be able to make it work

If he stole something important and he's within the right distances then he's not getting away

in here (this very particular corner of the world) it is best to let them take it... it depends on the circumstances, mostly... who's taking the vehicle and why

the possibility of being shot is a very real possibility, so I am not going to risk death over a vehicle

the other possibility is that they're not just breaking into my car but that they want my car, and if that is the case, they are most likely to be certain kind of people I do not want to deal with by force or confrontation

because of this, I have cheap cars... I have insurance, and I also have trackers, so it is smarter for me to just let them have it and then, later, make a couple of calls and I'll know where the vehicle ended up and why... lol

Alone or with my family? That changes the dynamic considerably. Are they alone? That changes the dynamic considerably. One on one, insurance can sort the inanimate object out and replace it if necessary provided I can’t scare them off empty handed. With disparity in numbers or a vulnerable family in tow, the penal code article in my state governing the use of deadly force activates. I was “afraid of death or grievous bodily harm” to my self or my family, and anyone attacking any of us can eat lead, or get cut if she gets to them first.

I would not have a car without a car alarm but here are some suggestions.

1) The new ones connect to an app on your smart phone so your phone will go off when the alarm does.

2) Always get an 'add on' called a 'glass breakage sensor'. What most people don;t know about car alarms is that if the thief breaks the glass and grabs something and doesn't open the door, the alarm will not go off, only if it has that add on.

I had mine broken into after getting a new alarm and asked the company where I bought it and had it installed why it didn't go off and he said because I didn't have a glass breakage sensor.

I was so mad I couldn't think straight, you mean they can't suggest one to you when you buy it? DUH!!!

Anyway, now you know... lol

Activate this stun gun, creep up from behind the perp and jab the SG right into their neck; throat, dick or balls... try to hold it there for several seconds. Unless they're sky high on some zombie street drugs, this will stop them in their tracks and make them back up from your car and from you. I would then back away from them and yell loudly and continuously for help to draw attention to the situation. Smash and grab thieves do not want to stick around so they will probably run away after a minute, unless they decide that they'd rather stay and do battle with you. If that becomes the case, run for your life.

I think I'm going to confront with a, "Hey, WTF!" kind of approach. It might very well get me killed. I'm not really wise so much as impulsive in these kinds of situations. I'm like looking to get into a violent conflict though, just stop the person from doing what they're doing.

Take the car or whatever else they want inside…I ’ll just get another one. It happened … don’t remembered how many times.
one time they took my kids scooters… they just have to walk now… I had to fix my window. another time they just took my car… at lease I am still safe 😊

I'd probably just take pictures. I have nothing of value in my car so they're barking up the wrong tree. But I'd like to document their waste of time to gloat about how dumb they are. Basically, the goal is to get them mad so they attack and then I have an excuse to defend myself.

hit the car alarm,
I might yell to divert them... "hey... thank you bro, what you need?" or something that would throw them off.. as long as I felt non threatened. Or "watch out for the damn snake"... I'd make sh! t up to get them out of their mindset so they think I'm concerned about them and on their side. I'm a bit avoidant...

I'm not chasing a thief at this point, no interest in going to prison for life if they get killed.

I have not had this happen yet, thank God. We have had a bunch of teenagers getting to get into cars on my neighborhood and steel. A few Cadillac Converters have been stolen off of trucks a few streets down from me as well. The scary thing is a lot of them have not been caught by cameras

Shout at them and confront. I’m not going to risk my life but I’m gonna be pissed and protect my own investments.

On a sad note one of my coworkers was gunned down in his car last month. And I suspect a similar case happened to him.

Get normal car don't show off you probably look rich and driving something expensive it may attract thieves in your area. If that not the case and you still feel unsafe change your place if jts easy for you. And of course you should call police. Get pepper spray too
