As someone with a criminal justice degree, what I learned is that whatever someone says, they have to have the means to carry it out in order for something to count as a threat, etc.
For example, if someone said they were going to beat you up, but they lived in another country, or even far away in your own country and made no efforts to actually carry out the action, it wouldn't be taken seriously.
Plus, there is no way to prove who exactly was using a specific device most of the time, especially when it involves strangers on the internet.

On top of all that, usernames online are often meaningless when trying to link them to a real person, and more people use VPNs now.

Makes sense. I just think they should investigate the person. Anyone threatening a person far away might be carrying out harm to be the people near them. . A lot of crimes would have been preventable if police took threats things seriously. But I know how the system works 🙂 like shit...

No. Mainly as these sites have people from around the world. So police have no jurisdiction over most. Plus it falls to you to prove your case is not a waste of police time.

If anything, police will arrest you for wasting their time.

Proof would be the facts such as dates, times, etc. That would verify a persons presence through their own tech.
Comments online. Eh. Ball of wax there. It would be up to a judge to accept such evidence or not.


I saw a criminal case show once. The hidden video of repeated attacks was lost, but because she wrote down the date and times of each attack on a wall calendar it was considered just as damning as the video would have been.

It probably would depend on who the cop was that you were talking to. Cops are like the rest of the general population. Some are more open minded that others.
