What do you imagine it would feel like to lose the ability to speak?

Awful. I rely on speaking as my primary way of expressing myself, and have a rather distinctive voice that I've put to great use; it'd be quite a blow to lose it. Although I suppose losing the ability to speak doesn't always mean losing the ability to *sing* (the human brain is WEIRD), but I have no musical talent at all.

The one good part would be that I, inspired by an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, have a dictaphone with recordings of all the phrases I'm likely to need on a typical day, so I won't be TOTALLY unprepared, even if it is a sudden thing.

It would be hard but think you could manage more easily than losing site or hearing

I’ve not been able to talk for days before. Had severe pneumonia from grief. Could hardly breathe too. Didn’t really want to talk at the time though.
