For your local area, what is a tip you can give a newcomer that will keep them safe?

I'll start.
If you're driving at night, don't trust your headlights to show you if a moose is crossing the road. They're too tall, you won't see the eye shine and by the time you see the body, you're already face deep in the damn things soul

Like in every city where a lot of people gather, you will find the occasional creep and harasser. This reply is mainly aimed at girls that have to travel at night in the city's not so well famed area.

First off, try to avoid those areas. If, for a reason or another you cannot, here are my tips to get you home as safe as possible.

1. Turn on the GPS of your smartphone.

2. Dial the 9-1-1 or whatever emergency number is in use in your area. Don't hit that "enter" button yet. When in an emergency, just press the enter button. Stress situations have demonstrated that it is more difficult to keep a cool head and dial the number.

3. Place your house key or car key in the palm of the hand you are best with. You can use them as "key knuckles" for self-defense.

4. Keep your smartphone in the other hand, ready to press the dial button while walking in those areas.

5. Turn the flash light of your smartphone on when walking in those dark areas.

6. Turn the voice recording app and the movie camera on as well. Should you encounter a potential danger, aim your cell phone towards the danger source.

7. Ask a friend to give you a call every 15 minutes. Should you fail to answer, the friend should call the emergency number. Thanks to the GPS signal, the authorities are able to locate you much faster.

Those would be my safety tips. They apply all over the world and not just in my area.

Prerequisites are of course to have a smartphone and network coverage.

I don't know about a moose but i live in deer country and our street is about 1-2 miles long and lined with horse ranches. Deers, snakes, cats and dogs cross constantly and the headlights definitely help. Is it because a moose is taller?
My tip would be to stay away from frat and soro parties. They have gotten away with drugging drinks (surprisingly a lot of women roofying the men), snatching people up who walk campus alone at night and raping them, and wrecklessly killing fellow newcomers during their “hazing” games.

i would say if anything, get chatting to locals, they will and do chat to visitors, hard to understand though lol.

yeah so learn some Geordie before u visit and be prepared for people talking to you, for girls actually chatting you up.

Watch out for the deer they are all over the place all the time. They may be nibbleing on some sprouts & as you go by they up & run right into your vehicle.

Keep and eye on the ground at all times if you don't have shoes on ants are not shy when it comes to attacking and snakes though rare can sneak up on you
