Several reasons:

• They use patented technology (the cyclone action that allows them to filter the air without a paper filter or collection bag), and that had to be engineered and tested hundreds of times before they got it working. No one else can use this tech without licensing it from Dyson.
• They also spend R&D money to make smaller, more efficient motors and to maximize airflow and other things.
• As such, they've marketed themselves as a premium brand - and people have accepted this. As such, a lot of what you are paying for is the name. It's just like buying Apple or Ferrari or Tiffany - they've positioned themselves as luxury brands, and never offer significant discounts, so they've trained everyone to expect a high price. They also use very effective (and expansive) marketing.

A Dyson that costs $900 retail likely costs $40 to make. Of course, if the retail price is $900, the retailer gets $300-400 of that, and perhaps a wholesaler another $200, so Dyson is getting $3-400 or so against the $40 to build it.
