I'm watching videos on species counterpoint and taking lots of notes! Here are my notes so far (I'm studying from various YT videos as well as reading books and they sometimes have different rules and I'm trying to consolidate them):

Steps and Leaps:
-- Steps/Conjunct Motion: moving to neighboring notes in the scale.
-- Leaps/Disjunct Motion: moving to non-neighboring notes. Leaps
grab attention (distracting from other voices) and should be used
sparingly.
-- A skip is a small leap by a 3rd.

Leap Intervals:
-- Perfect Consonance: 4th, 5th, 8ve (octave)
-- Imperfect Consonance: 3rd, 6th
-- Dissonance: 7th (extremely attention-grabbing and to be avoided
in species 1)
-- Tritone: 6 semitones apart (very dissonant and forbidden)

Leap Law of Recovery:
-- Leaps want a smooth recovery ("gravity"). This doesn't apply as
much for skips (by 3rds) as leaps 4ths or larger.

Leap Gap and Fill:
-- Very large leaps create a gap to the listener's ear that want to
be filled.

Beginning, Middle, and End:
-- A Cantus Firmus always ends on the tonic. Very often it will also
begin with the tonic.
-- A peak/climax note indicates the middle part of the story. It is
placed somewhere in between the beginning and end (not
necessarily perfectly in the center). After the peak, the melody
should descend towards the tonic to reach its end.

Triadic Concept:
-- 1st, 3rd, and 5th (tonic triad) notes feel the most at rest since
they belong to the tonic triad (chord). Peaks are often notes
not belonging to the tonic triad since they create more tension.

Avoid Monotony
-- Avoid repetition. For species 1 counterpoint, we should entirely
avoid repeating the same consecutive note in succession. We
also want to avoid repeating grouped patterns of notes. The
Cantus Firmus should be complete and indivisible as a whole,
not something that can be split apart into repetitive chunks.
-- Avoid repeating the melody's high point (peak) or lowest point.

A Cantus Firmus has no memorable rhythm, no metric emphasis, and
all notes of equal length (ex: only whole notes). The entire span
from lowest note to peak should not be more than a 10th.

Acceptable Intervals:
-- Perfect 8ve, 5th, 4th
-- Major and minor 6th and 3rd
-- Diatonic whole and semitones (major and minor seconds, i. e.)
... Basically: m2, m3, m6, M2, M3, M6, P4, P5, P8

Unacceptable Intervals:
-- Compound intervals (larger than 8ve)
-- All 7ths
-- Diminished intervals, including d7
-- All augmented intervals, including A2
-- Chromatic semitones
... Basically: 7ths, chromatic, diminished, augmented, and compound.

Steps (2nd), skips (3rd), Leaps (4th+):
-- Two to four total leaps allowed in the 8-16 tone Cantus Firmus
depending on length (maximum of 2 per 8 tones).
-- Never leap twice in a row in the same direction.
-- Never leap three times in a row regardless of direction.
-- Better to change direction following a leap of a 4th.
-- *Must* change direction after 5th or more and then step or skip
in opposite direction.
