Having done it, I can honestly say yes it actually is better sadly LOL. I've gotten people back immediately after they did me wrong and you do get a certain level of fulfillment from that

But once you wait and get them back later when they didn't expect it, actually does feel more fulfilling. Because you got them by surprise the same way they got you

I'm remember one time particular and high school this dude hit me in the face in front of several people. And I let it go, keeping myself calm enough so his guard would be down. Make him feel comfortable as if he won.

Then when he felt safe and not suspecting it at all I backhand him across the face so hard he spun around and face plant on the ground. Didn't get up for like 5 or 10 minutes.

Did it in front of everyone and acted like nothing happened. No one said shit because they all knee he deserved it. Once he got up you could still see his face and eyes were red from crying on the ground. And my God did it feel good

Fuck that. If I get vengeance at all, I want it to happen while it should still be on their mind. I want them to get a taste of their own medicine, not be punished in a way that feels completely senseless to them.

At that point you're probably worse than the person you're exacting revenge on.
