How many of you have brought and displayed a bird box this bearing season?

I have about 15 bird boxes in my garden. One has been used to successfully raise blue tits who have all left the nest, and there is potentially two others in use for the same species of bird.

So proud to be helping my local wildlife. I also have four bird baths located in different areas of the garden, and two bird feeding stations.

I have so many birds visit and fight over territory that I only wish my neighbours helped share the burden. Not many people put up a simple box or supply water. What are you planning on doing for your birdies this summer?

No. But I have robins who build nests on top of my outside lights. I've had as many as four nests at one time, but only one the last few years.

They always made a nest right next to my back door. So every time I went in and out the mama bird would freak out. She'd fly off and make a bunch on noise away from the nest to distract me. So last year I put something up there to stop them from building a nest there and build it further from the door.

I noticed something interesting this year. Apparently the fledglings were already out of the nest and on the ground. I walked past and there was only one fledgling. But there were 6 or 7 adults all making a racket trying to keep me away from the fledgling. That means all the adults were trying to protect the fledgling, not just the parents.

In the past I have had actual bird houses (what we call them). That was years ago though.

I also have a lot of bunnies and squirrels. Also opossum, raccoons, chipmunks who sit on my window sill to eat, ducks, hawks and sometimes deer. My neighbors have seen fox and mink in their yards, but I've never seen one. Other birds we have are cardinals, wrens, woodpeckers, hummingbirds and bluebirds.

We have skunks. I don't like them at all. They can be very aggressive and I see them a lot when I walk late at night. When it's dark, I don't see them until I'm way too close to them. I don't want to get sprayed.

By the way, opossums gotta be about the dumbest mammal on the planet. :)

That’s a good idea helping the Tobin nest a little further away to prevent distress. Do you have any water supply in your lovely garden? You can give them some without buying something fancy, just buy providing an old fish or bowel with some rocks and water inside.

My wife and I Iive on some acreage in a rural setting. It's oak grassland with some pines and other vegetation. There are lots of birds around, including quail and turkey, as well many other types. Some are really pretty.

We have three hummingbird feeders and two large bird feeders full of sunflower seeds. We have three bird boxes out in the back yard. I know they've been used in the past but don't check on them. We also have a bird bath and a large, flat basin full of rocks so that birds and pollinator insects can drink.

I have two bird baths, which everyone from finches, crows, squirrels and some use. I flush them out daily. Also planted pink powder puff trees which everyone (animals, all sorts of insects and birds) enjoy also. I have a video of one of our squirrels sitting in them munching the old blooms a couple weeks ago. If they happen to miss some the birds take them dry to add to their nests in our trees. We have a big wild display the cats like to watch through the windows as much as us.

No. They aren’t allowed outside. We’re big on keeping doors closed. Well.. technically. I have a large kennel run with a top and doggie door into the house. One goes out there in the day. I don’t encourage it. I’ve had past cats catch hummingbirds and others in there.
I did have an outdoor cat when younger. Our squirrel used to take his bell collar off. I’d know as the chime would be in a hopping sound as it ran off with it. lol 🐿 Not sure it was the best idea as it allowed other animals to know where he was too. Learned a lot through the years.

You planted trees, so your efforts helping the wildlife will succeed for years. Plant a tree people! They prevent flooding and create a habitat. Also, not to mention how beautiful it makes a garden, when you design it for nature. Provides free shade and privacy too.
