I've had nothing but bad experiences with US car manufacturers (the companies) as a whole, and while my grandfather loved Dodge and Chevy, he was replacing them every few years until he died.

That said, I don't really see Dodge and Subaru as competitors since they're most known for completely different types of cars that generally don't appeal to the same audience. Dodge's competitor is Chevy, and Subarus typically rival Toyota.

    No, they're not.

Of all American-made car companies, you couldn't GIVE me a Dodge/Chrysler. Those cars are THE worst engineered pieces of junk I've ever driven. They start off looking good and seemingly OK, but within a year or so they start breaking down nonstop. And they tend to break stuff that should NEVER break (door handles, shift levers, door locks, etc...).

Comparing dodges to Subarus is kind of like comparing apples to oranges. It really depends on what you want, which aspects of a vehicle you value. I would say in overall cost and reliability Subarus are a better option.

I have found Dodge to be very reliable. The Ram pickup, trucks have a very good review as well. My wife had a Plymouth Horizon for 15 year. I t was in such good shape, when we sold it we had people practically fighting in our driveway wanting to buy it.

Yeah, I had a Saturn sl2 2000, but the gas pedal was giving me problems when I had it or the engine was, I can't remember that well anymore, but it was hard to drive normally lol

Subarus always has issue with their transmissions in the past. But either way, the general rule is the less power a vehicle has the more reliable it will be. Less strain. But also the parts an be made cheaper too... Just check recalls on the history line up from both

Actually there reallys hasn't been that many issues with subaru transmissions. When they started switching over to a contunuously varriable transmission in 1989 there were a few hiccups that they were able to work though. I think most people refer the the head gasget problem with natrually asperated boxer engine modles built between 1999 and 2004. After 2004 the issue was rectified and haspen really been a problem.

Every standard I've driven of theirs had issues with the synchros in the gearbox. I personally despise cvt transmissions. There's a noticeable delay in acceleration and makes the car less safe to drive in the winter. Though my experiences are from many years ago

I've been working at a Subaru dealership for the past 7 years. It is extremely rare that I see a Subaru with less than about 150k miles on it have transmission issues unless they have modified the vehicle or weren't maintaining it properly.

One was modified but 3 of them all had the same shifting issues. None were over 100k miles. I'm not saying dodge is better. They had major issues with their auto trans back in the day not being able to handle the power output. They made great standard transmissions though.

That would accurate, but not by much, depending which ranking list you want to use. Subaru ranks #7, Dodge (Chrysler/Fiat) ranks #9. If you want a car that will be on the road long past 200,000 miles, or 120,000 kilometers, get a Toyota or a Honda.

I would have to go with a Subaru.
I've known people that routinely get over 200,000 miles or more on them.
They used to have an issue with head gaskets failing around 100,000 miles.
Not sure if they finally fixed that.

Yeah I second that! The head gasket issue was resolved back around 2004. So as long as you're not getting a subaru between the years 1999 to 2004, that won't be an issue.

I wouldn’t buy either. Dodges are junk and subies are legendary for blowing head gaskets and several other expensive engine issues

only if you get a subaru between the years 1997-2004... though if you buy a 20 year old car you're gonna have some issues.

Out in the field I have a 2002 chev car just sitting that I bought with my ex-wife 20 years ago. We drove it on our honeymoon, she used it for work every day, we used it to bring our son home from the hospital as a baby, he's a teenager now and that car still runs and drives and he was practising driving with it.
It starts in the middle of winter without the block heater even being plugged in.
My ex-wife has probably gone through 8 new vehicles while her old chev car just sits, but still runs smooth.
