Trending & News Happiness isn’t a constant state. This idea is a product of the feminization of language and the devaluation of specific definition. Happiness is a fleeting high you get from accomplishment or having your needs met in the moment.
What you are really trying to ask is if we are able to be content. I would say that on average, no, people in western society aren’t able to be content. This comes from generations of consumerist marketing to ego and the perpetuation of the myth that the individual is more important than the larger group. This impacts women substantially more as the marketing to women is highly based around the formula of creating and injecting shame in the shadow of beauty and power. It is so deeply ingrained in women that you’ll see women literally make the claim and honestly believe that they wear makeup for themselves. Men are falling victim to this trap as well but the approach seems to be to weaken the resolve through confusion and anger; this is then used to feminize men and cookie cutter the shame approach from womens marketing.
This results in a consumerist society where men are judged on what they can provide and women are judged on what they can obtain from men. Women begin to demand more and more to the point that it is unsustainable and men begin to crave more to provide fit and be worthy of women. Because women can be manipulated in this way, nobody aside from people educated in marketing, sociology, psychology, or anthropology will be able to be content. Even for me, someone that has dedicated a significant amount of my life to reading psych relating to the dynamics of relationships and how the different sexes process information, it is hard to not get sucked in because I want a family and women are so insanely fucked up as it relates to their sense of reality that it becomes impossible to not beat myself up for not being wealthier.
I think what people lack today that people had before is purpose
I think people are more vocal and aware of their emotions than they were back then. However, I can see how sadness can become more prevalent with more responsibility and choices in life. Centuries ago, one purpose was more common, so simplicity in life was present as opposed to now. So people were more accepted and focused on their tasks to dwell on the questions asked through social and entertainment media. There were fewer things available to spark emotion and internal inspection.

Some do (at least from what I've seen) because they aren't grateful or thankful.
if people only focus on bad things that happened to them , they will tend to be unhappy
