As it refers to dating, it can for some people and almost always just initially/starting. For me, most of the time I've heard this itnseems to imply people acting like what they are not to appear mysterious, special, or unique. I think you should just be yourself and obviously do not give all information about yourself on the first date. Personally, I like transparency and honesty
