In the hills of North Carolina, A Confederate veteran named Tom Dooley was wrongfully convicted and hung for killing a woman in North Carolina but was captured in Tennessee. It's a very big folk story in my part of the country as it happened in my area.

I immediately thought of the song. My older sister had the record and occasionally played it when I was little.
