time is mere perception... so both and all questions regarding time will have different answers or perspectives... the more you try to narrow and simplify it from one focal point of view, the more elusive it will become

I see 'time' as an abstraction - a model to explain processes; to specify specific points of 'universal' arrangements/situations; a scale to measure other factors with.

I don't think that 'time' exists as a ''force''.

As a provocation: is it possible that time DOES go backwards... and we are unable to move 'forward'?

Thus -to me- 'time' began when humans invented the idea. Before it also was there; but being un-used?

Time does run backwards. We just don't know how to do it yet.

time is what we use to keep track of our doings while we are alive. after that, there is no time.

As to what it is, I'd say it's what distinguishes now from then. Which is to say I have no clue!
