Any tips on getting really tight corners with a miter saw?

Use a good quality miter saw and take care of it. Do NOT use it as a chop saw. Don't use it for any big wood. Don't use it for any non-wood products. Make sure it's always stored on a flat surface, with nothing that can bump it and get it out of whack. Lock it down between uses.

When you change the angle, don't let it "ratchet" through the stops. You don't want the stops to wear. So pull the release fully when you change angles. When you get it in place, lock it down.

Make sure the wood is placed on the bed correctly and held solidly in place. Clamping it might help. If it's a longer piece of wood, make sure the full length is supported.

Use a good quality sharp blade. Use the right type of blade. A good blade won't be cheap.

Cut from the top side if possible, since the wood could splinter as you finish the cut. Cut slowly to avoid splintering.

It really shouldn't be that hard to get a good cut with a good miter saw. If you really get up close to the finished joint you might see the seam, but with a decent finish it should look fine.

Make sure it's square, use a sharp blade, set the depth properly, cut slowly, use a support board if needed, and use some masking tape if you want...
