I was a little old for the emo movement, lmao, I was like 25 when all that was happening😂 BUT…. I did work at a Hollister at that time, and I was kind of emo-adjacent, by way of a few co-workers. Not everyone was emo, but a few kids definitely qualified. Lot of emo music there too. I actually used to tease one of the guys there because he listened to Taking Back Sunday in the back room, and I owe him a major apology because it turns out they’re one of my favorite bands😂
But we also had the touchscreen kiosk where people could select songs to play over the store speakers, and that’s where I first encountered early Paramore, another one of my favorites, as well as the OG Panic! At The Disco album (although I didn’t hear I Write Sins Not Tragedies until maybe three or four years ago, and I’m wondering if it wasn’t made available on the touchscreen since some people, to my shock, consider “goddamn” to be a heavy curse word…blows my mind every time I hear it censored lmao). I was gone before MCR came out, because I would’ve been like 30, and if you still work at Hollister at 30, you may want to consider “joining the Black Parade” lmfao. (Do those guys have any songs that aren’t about death, or dying, or being dead?😂 Now THAT’S emo, lmao)
Anyway, I retrospectively enjoy emo music now, I don’t even listen to it for the emo-ness, though. Honestly, I usually only understand rap lyrics, any sort of rock music is hard for me to understand with the screaming or vocal distortion, plus the noisy guitars, etc. I’m kind of just enjoying the overall sound. If I looked at the lyrics I’d be like “damn, dude, cheer the fuck up!”😂 I definitely never had “the look” though. Black washes me out, it doesn’t suit me, haha
Just remembered my favorite Hollister prank: everyone there hated Simple Plan. We had a remote control that could skip songs but then it disappeared, may have fallen into the trash or something. So when that happened, at the end of my shift before leaving, I’d play every Simple Plan song and bounce. Usually I’d wait for it to start playing so they’d know I did it, haha. I remember walking out with my back to them and two middle fingers raised one time, just loudly singing 🎶Heartbreeeeaaaakkkkkeeeerrrrrrrr…. heartbreeeeeaaaakkkkkeeeeerrrrrrr….🎶🖕😝🖕
When I was a preteen, we don't talk about those years
