I think it has a lot to do with how content a person is. I've always said, if you don't love yourself, how do you expect to be in relationship and love someone else?

The best way I was loved, that was when I was my most selfish version.

I was so selfish, gosh, I feel like I was such a bad person, yet my ex was head over heels in love with me. I lived like a goddess.

Slowly, when I fell so hard that I became selfless and put myself second, our relationship deteriorated.

So, be the selfish one, be the bad one, the good ones are only appreciated in books and movies.

I'm not confortable with the words "self love", because they make me think of narcissism. On the other hand I'd say we have to know well and accept our self as we are. At least this is how I conceive the notion of self love. Once we are genuinely aware of our tendencies, these will become tools to be used when needed in full conscience.
