Happy dreams or nightmares? Which one are you?

Both. First, for some reason, I'm a "binary" sleeper. That is, unless I am totally and overwhelmingly beat (in which case I'll sleep for 7 hours straight), my sleep pattern will usually be 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 2 hours and 1 hour. If I stay up at any "natural break", I'm fine. If I have to get up in the middle of one of these cycles, it's not a pretty picture. As to your questions: dreams during the first hour are usually clearing out the weird stuff. After that, things get better with each hour.

Years ago, at a computer ops center, I worked a weekly, rotating shift- week one, shift 1. Week two, shift 2. Week three, shift 3. Week four, back to shift 1. Week five, shift 2, etc. Basically that meant that I would get 20 nights of sleep every 21 days. Maybe the odd binary rhythm of my sleep patterns was in self-defense. Who knows!

Lately, nightmares. I've been dreaming of being stranded on an island, with a nasty looking walrus, with long, straggly black hair, big tits and lips like a baboons ass, that keeps trying to kill me. I haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks!

Face it head on and kick its ass! That's what I do when I have dreams like that and they usually end before I'm even able to. Of course you'd have to know you were dreaming and not in any real danger

Nightmares! In fact I woke up this morning by someone right in the middle of it.
Nightmares ruin my mornings because it takes me a while to shake them off.
My mind and body both go through the motions so vivid, I really think it really happened.

I don't have nightmares. I had every night nightmare after I snorted few gram coke over few weeks. My brain wasn't happy as I stopped.

I get more nightmares as I suffer PTSD, but thankfully none recently.
