What would you bring to a gun fight: a semi automatic gun (pistol, rifle, shotgun, etc) or a bolt action rifle?

It’s most likely that I will have my sidearm—because I’m not going to go to a place where I know there will be a fight.

If I knew the fight was coming (and, probably, only if I thought the fight was going to come to me), I would bring a rifle —whichever rifle I shoot best (and I’m not telling you which that is)— and I would bring all of my friends armed with rifles.

A sawed off.10 gauge and a pair of.500 Magnum as a backup weapon. i'm not a weapons expert, but those are sure to hit the target.

You aren’t a weapons expert! :) The shotgun you mention is only likely to hit a very close target—and I doubt you hit anything with those huge revolvers. :)

A rifle is a more stable firing platform than a pistol so accuracy is easier to obtain especially when under pressure when your adrenaline is pumping. Recoil is lower in a standard.223/5.56 rifle than say a 12 gauge shotgun so shooting performance will be less impacted. Rifles provide the longest effective ranges if you were to compare a typical pistol, to shotgun, to rifle. Thus if you want to keep some space between you and your adversary it’s the way to go. Rifles typically have higher capacity magazines when compared to say a shotgun. Ammo weight is less than shotgun shells. When engaging multiple targets, a semi-automatic rifle is going be the superior choice when compared to a bolt action rifle. Most importantly it’s what I have trained with most often.
