Would you rather have a musket or a crossbow?

In all honestly the crossbow is kind of a better weapon at least compared to early muskets for a number of reasons.

1# You can arguably reload it faster then you can a musket.

2# It's just as accurate at the same range as a musket is.

3# It's more or less completely silent except for the mechanisms working when you fire it.

4# It's able to pierce medieval plate armor so chances are it stands a better chance at getting a one shot kill compared to a musket where I've seen pictures of people shot in the head with a musket and were still alive, conscious and able to fight.

5# A Musket can't be used in the rain and you'd have a hard time using it in the wind or in a really humid environment whereas you can use a crossbow in any of those environments.

So yeah crossbow is overall better.

For defense, a crossbow. I can reload that a lot faster than I can a musket. Also more accurate, if a well made one.

Crossbow. I could hunt pheasants, quail and other birds.(I'd rather hunt buxom blonde birds, but... does my saying I could hunt game with a crossbow almost make me sound like a good ol' boy?)

And fire at a faster rate, and silent which is good in certain situations, and you won’t run out of gunpowder, and its probably more accurate.
