
What kind of insect is this?


Looks like a Sawfly. They are related to wasps and bees. The Sawfly gets it's name from it's ovipositor that saws into plants to lay eggs inside.

Length is about the diameter of a penny.

No, but the back is "split," like two in one.
It's winter here, so most bugs are hibernating.
