I’d say that the reason that pure love is hard to come by is because of not necessarily a lack of self-respect, but rather a lack of concern for others.


In other words, self-centeredness + narcissism.


Layered on top of that, I believe is a lack of trust in other people + the abuse of trust from other people.


It’s difficult to be concerned for others, altruistic, and trusting, when many people take advantage of that type of kindness and vulnerability.


So, many people go the opposite direction and fend for themselves. They become cynical. They become cautious and skeptical and closed off. That way they can’t be hurt or taken advantage of.


But like a plant trying to grow in dry soil, that’s a difficult environment for love to thrive.


I think a flexible approach should be used.


Yes, for love to thrive, one must exercise empathy and compassion and trust.


But, there are many selfish and malicious people in the world that we must protect ourselves from.


So I’d say, love others as much as your heart can allow, but understand the risks as well.
