I had a really embarrassing moment on a train?

I get the train back from work and it usually take around 20 minutes, I usually sit wherever is free and I see first. Today, I got on and saw a seat. A man got on and gave me a look which I thought meant move up, which I did. Then the man working on the train told me I can’t sit there that’s where people who have bikes go and told me to move rudely. I said sorry and found another seat. I genuinely didn’t know they were for bikes. I ended up crying on the way back and I feel crap. Was what I did that bad?:(((
