What car is gas efficient and got a lot of miles on a full tank?

I'm looking for a car to buy but I don't know what car are the most gas efficient. I don't know much about cars.

I used to have a VW with the turbo-diesel engine. I could commute all week and fuel up on a Saturday. That was about 530 miles and still have a comfortable margin. So about 600 miles per tank getting 56 miles per gallon with the manual transmission. More recent VW diesels don't get MPG's that high.

In general, the smaller the better, also manual are slightly more fuel efficient than automatic. Shift gears asap. Also don't drive around with your car full of stuff.

All cars are, as long as you're on the highway. The more you take it out there, the better mileage you'll get, gallon wise. The problem is, you can't always be on the highway, right?
