Expensive is relative. In the 1700s aluminium was a very rare metal that cost a considerable amount more than gold, Napoleon had cutlery and plates made out of this metal which affects the time would have cost the yearly income of smaller countries. Nowadays aluminium is so common and cheap that we think nothing of throwing an aluminium coke can in the trash, something unthinkable in 1780.

The most expensive think I think ever built by man I think would be either the great pyramid in Egypt or the Great Pyramid of Cholula in Mexico. Both represent decades or more of work and thousands of workers who need to be fed and paid.

The international space station cost $150 billion to build, something like $6 billion to operate.

It's was so rare, difficult to mine and hard to produce. Now it's really common.
