21 states in America will teach elementary school children how to write in cursive. Do you think all schools should be taught to stop confusion?

GenX students did not learn to write in cursive at all. Now some States like California and Tennessee will be making it as part of their curriculum.

I was taught to write in cursive in third grade. In fact I believe all schools in America taught all children to write in cursive. It was Standard. Then some Schools stopped teaching it.
How confusing is this going to be because not everyone will be taught the same way.
Ah heck, it's just going to be another thing to add to the mass confusion anyway.
I'd hate to be a mail carrier and try to read envelops and such that are in cursive and I don't know cursive. Oh, maybe they'll just go by the zip code.🧐

The information about GenX didn't learn cursive. This was on my news article feed. I don't know why they didn't check their work. I guess I shouldn't believe everything I read 🤗

I still have no idea what the hell cursive is! The first I ever heard of it was back in the `90's when my nephew was complaining about having to learn it. I asked several times what it is and never got an answer. I can only guess it's some fancy new name for what we used to call, "writing", as opposed to printing. apparently, you're not allowed to use old terminology anymore and people have to make up fancy new words and phrases for shit! Kinda like how you're not say, "crippled" anymore. For a while, you had to say, "Disabled". Now, it's 'Differently abled". Like, somehow, changing the name is gonna magically change the condition.

I'm Gen-X. I write in cursive. I know people from the USA and UK who prefer to write in cursive who are my age.

It's pathetic that cursive has been dropped by schools anywhere. Not everyone has computer access. In fact the majority of the planet don't have access to computers. It's arrogance in the West to insist everyone learns computer skills but interpersonal skills are nonexistent.

If I'm caught on the road in a blizzard I want people who know how to build a shelter and start a fire, not fill an Excel spreadsheet on ten levels. Why are basic survival skills not compulsory subjects?

Canning food. Compost and worm farms. Basic crop rotation and cultivation on a domestic level. You know, the things our grandparents in the 1940s all knew how to do?

Let's be realistic. In fifty years, there won't be any paper. We're only holding onto it now because it's been a part of society since we learnt what bark was. Soon enough, there won't be any mail for cursive to make a mark on. You should instead be concerned over children learning a skill that I assure you, will become obsolete.

My boyfriend just died 4 months ago and he had ADHD, but he was brilliant! He could do math problems like Einstein (if you even know who Einstein was) and he was brilliant in astronomy and could tell wonderful stories all about our Universe.

I'm GenX and I learned to write in cursive. I also haven't done so in at least 20 years now. I learned how to use an abacus. Not really much value to that skillset now a days. Considering how dumb kids are based on what they cost I'd say there are more important things they should be learning.

where did you get your misinformation? i am genX and was taught cursive as well as every genX i have ever met was. the ciriculum not teaching cursive started about 15 years ago. genX was out of school about 20 to 25 years ago.

a little more precisely, in tennessee, the vert last of the school. systems/districts in the state dropped teaching cursive around 2014 to 2016 and the 1st districts were around 2010 to 2013. hell there were national headlines about this nationwide in the twenty-teens. was around the same tine as the "common core math" bs. now if the state you were/are in did the cursive dropping sooner, I don't know.

I'm not an American, I'm British, but I agree it should be the standard.

I was taught cursive in Primary School, but it was immediately dropped in High School, so all but a handful of everyone in my year forgot it and resorted to block lettering (myself included)

It would take no effort on the schools part to just say "write this way from now on", after all. All arguments for speed or efficiency aside, it just looks better;

Maybe the school you attended taught you. But like I said only 21 states are teaching cursive.
The article specified that GenX students did not learn cursive as most schools didn't teach the class for a while.
I read it off of my news phone feed this morning.
It's news because Gavin Newsom made the law in California to teach it in schools again as they had stopped teaching it.

Problem is most confuse Gen X with Baby Boomers and forget that computer classes for Gen X amounted to nothing more than a typing class in middle school with a monitor versus a piece of paper on a type writer. I think my home was one of the few homes I knew of with a computer in it and only the second in my area to have early dial up access when I was 17 or 18. Every one having a cell phone didn’t happen till my late 20’s early 30’s. Point is, cursive was commonly still taught everywhere then and particularly here in California. This ceasing to teach cursive in various states began after 2000-whatever. All of Gen-X sorts were out of High School by this point. The succession of cursive teaching occurred with either Gen-Y or Gen-Z (Millennials), of which a woman I was seeing belonged to one of and where I first learned through here that cursive was no longer taught. That she could not read cursive because of wide spread computer use. Granted I noted how most people speak in “emojis” which is essentially mankind returning to communicating in hieroglyphs … primitive communication has become once again, en vogue via the digital medium. Anyway, the author likely isn’t away where the Gen X generation falls and confused us with the millennials the same way Millennials confuse us with Baby Boomers. I mean, pretty much we were still turning in hand written assignments through our high school experience that were written in cursive. I will note I was an early bucker of the cursive system using our home type writer when it came to reports beginning in 4th grade when it was discovered a girl in my class was erasing my name on my turned in homework and reports, and putting her own name on it. Since I was the only one who who had a typewriter at home. Even if I forgot to place my name on my homework or report, everyone knew who the work belong to thus ending that problem. Still even then, our first exposure to a computer at school was in our fifth grade.

I learned cursive as well and the only time I use it is when I sign my name. The rest of the time I print. I don't mind if they don't teach cursive. They need to teach trigonometry.

I was taught how to write in cursive in the second grade. My sister who is a retired teacher is teaching my son how to write in cursive now. 👍🙂

Apparently the kids like the idea and are thrilled to have a signature for the first time. They usually just print it because that's all they were taught.
I always use cursive when I write. They say it isn't any faster than keyboard writing, but I beg to differ.

I've written poetry before
and I always used cursive.
The more some people practice using it, the better it gets; this excludes doctor's because no one can read
they're handwriting.

what ever gen was coming out of highschool 8n around 2018 was the last around here to be taught cursive by the way. i was helping nieces and nephews with homework when they got notices of the school district (whole state) was stopping teaching it.
