Typically for me it's a dichotomy between the physical and the mental. For example, I got a type-2 ankle sprain last month and that didn't feel all the good physically. It was especially painful in the beginning going to the bathroom hobbling around on crutches in a very small Japanese home with very cramped spaces.
Yet I was also in a very positive overall mental spirit since I finally managed to quit drinking alcohol towards the end of last year. Actually over the pandemic, I started drinking so heavily at home that even when I was sober, my brain seemed to be in a state of fog. I was starting to worry I did permanent brain damage and that I would never be able to think clearly ever again.
Then especially around the beginning of January after over 2 months of not drinking a drop of alcohol, I really felt my brain clearing up. I could suddenly write very freely again like I'm doing now without feeling a sense of writer's block where I'd write one sentence and feel completely blocked until I started drinking.
So that made me super happy and feeling amazing even though I also felt awful and in a lot of pain from the ankle injury.
Thank you for the very detailed answer!

no, it is usually an either/or situation.
