How did you help with the film?

Just pre-production in my case writing code. I worked on the code for a lot of the small creature simulations (bugs and insects) in Pandora.

A very unusual requirement for that film is that the director (Camereon) wanted to be able to see as close as possible how the final shot was like through a virtual camera, like this:


So usually to render a lot of visual effects that require complex simulations like a whole bunch of critters, billions of particles, fluids, anatomical simulations, complex lighting (path tracing), etc, we would render it offline in post (often requiring render farms of many computers all working together to slowly render frames).

Yet because of this unusual requirement, we actually had to simulate and render these effects in real-time. That was one of my main contributions was to be able to visualize these things on the fly at 60+ frames per second. In particular, I had to optimize our code to simulate over 300,000 creatures per frame at once on a single machine for a lot of the shots of Pandora since Jim didn't find the scene life-like enough until we reached over 300K creatures.

I was a former game developer before I became a VFX developer, so that actually helped a lot in my case since for video games, we have to render everything in real-time. So I was used to employing a lot of tricks and hacks to make things look good while still rendering them at 60+ FPS.

That mainly my small contribution to the film. The animators were the ones that made things look amazing though. I just wrote the code to simulate the things they did faster.

The ultimate trick was quite simple: basically "instancing" as they call it in computer graphics. Like let's say you have a Super Mario sprite as a simplistic example:


But we're making a simulation where we have hundreds of thousands of mario characters all at once in a single, ultra high-res IMAX shot. In that case, it'd be silly to duplicate the mario sprite hundreds of thousands times in memory and pay for the cost of loading it each time and transferring it from slower memory (disk, DRAM) to faster memory (CPU cache, registers) each time.

That's an obvious example but it gets a bit complicated with 3D models and animations generated on the fly with skeletons and inverse kinematics and whatnot. So I wrote a "smart caching" system that would automatically recognize duplications in memory and de-duplicate them at a very generalized that works not just for images and textures but also 3D models, animations, everything.

I hope you'll forgive me for being a bit technical but for Isla, what I did there was actually akin to garbage collection at the lowest memory allocator level and functioned a similar way to algorithms like Mark-and-Sweep (although with constant-time complexity using a highly tuned hash table) and combined with persistent data structures as commonly found in functional programming languages like Clojure (but implemented in C++).

However, instead of collecting resources no longer referenced, it actually collected duplicates. So instead of a "garbage collector", it was a "duplicate collector". Two or more memory chunks allocated with identical contents would be consolidated into a single chunk with a featherweight spinlock and the duplicate chunks would be automatically freed.

This allowed me to generalize the extremely complex problem of trying to instance all the redundant data for 300K+ 3D creatures in real-time for maximum temporal locality.

Besides the challenge of instancing (structural sharing) of all this complex and non-homogeneous data, we did have very beefy 32-core machines to work with, but utilizing all those cores was a major challenge without spending a lot of time wasted on thread synchronization, false sharing, etc.

So that's where I approached it using persistent data structures with value semantics to solve the problem making thread-safety and thread-efficiency a no-brainer and very tuned copy-on-write methods where portions of a data structure could be overwritten with a new block of data with a write request while the rest of the structure would be shallow copied (the only area where atomics were required).

This type of immutability at the lowest memory level comes with its single-threaded overhead (around 2.5x to 3x time for writes, and around 1.5x the time for random access, although with almost equally fast sequential read access) but with 32 cores, that overhead was a trivial cost in exchange for the temporal locality, thread efficiency, and the general ability to write code purely dealing with value semantics without a care in the world with respect to thread-safety despite using no thread locks or atomics at all but the lowest level.
