I think he has embellished the truth a bit. Either on purpose or he himself didn’t really know what was happening and he imagined his own scenarios.

I don’t think he is a liar, I think he was just beguiled.

The CIA or EG&G or whatever were probably trying to induce original ideas with particular stimuli. When he didn’t produce anything or the whole project was a failure they pulled the pin.

I think you put it really well. I would ordinarily say yes I believe him, but I've also entertained the idea that it was some kind of operation maybe to make other countries THINK we had this kind of technology when we don't.
I also come back around to his overall point he's been making for 39 years that even though we have these things we still don't have a clue how they work. That always seemed to be his point and what I think gives him a lot of credibility, the way he just shrugs and says I don't know.
