What's your opinion on home owners associations? Would you buy a HOA home, why, why not?

It seems like they are everywhere in a nice neighborhood. I despise HOA with a passion.

I used to hate HOAs, and then I lived around inconsiderate, nutty, space cadet neighbors. Now I absolutely love HOAs. I don't love HOA dues, but those are usually a comparably small price to pay for having someone to enforce living standards in the community.

Plus, a lot of HOAs use the dues for community benefit activities and little improvements.

I have heard enough nightmare stories with powertripping HOAs involved that I will never buy into an HOA connected property.

It's horrible. They micro manage literally everything you do with your own property.

And I heard they can actually take your home away from you too.

I live in a condo complex with an HOA. It's less than ideal, but makes sense by taking care of the common grounds.

If I owned a house in a typical subdivision, I would not like an HOA. They are overly restrictive.

They have their advantages such as keeping property values up by keeping subdivisions clean and nicely kept. But they can be a pain in the butt too when keeping you from using certain paint colors or decorations.

I have my own house but there’s an HOA associated with it and I’m on the board but they charge $50 now every month and I don’t like it because they do absolutely nothing to justify the $50
