Why are tangerines and oranges pre-cut already?

Citrus fruits have segments because the ovary of their flowers are multi-locule. So one flower produces multiple seeds, the seeds stay in their separate little membranes and the ovary (fruit) grows around the seed to protect it.

Quite similar to humans where the uterus walls will thicken to protect the egg ☺️
