Who's with me?
Why is fruit salad always chopped up into huge pieces of fruit?
Who's with me?
I don't know, the last time I had an "all chopped up" fruit salad was at an ex's SIL's house... It tasted like diapers and she put in way too much sugar.
I haven't tried one like it since.
I live in Canada, so fresh fruits are kind of a summer or fall treat. I prefer getting big chunks so I feel like I'm eating a whole fruit. And I can pick out ones I like more easily and save them for last.
But I'll have to give a smaller chopped fruit salad another try. This time I'm making it myself and adding no sugar or whatever the fuck the SIL added that made it smell like fucking diapers.
Yeah, it grossed me out. I actually couldn't eat it. It was a waste of fruit, hardly anyone touched it.
Try a smoothie. All the fruit is cut very small so you get that blend of all of them you’re looking for.
As a former chef, we cut them larger for a number of reasons:
1. Efficiency: fewer cuts, less time, more food prepped.
2. Presentation: it looks good in larger, recognizable pieces. Too small and it also will tend to get mushy or lose shape.
3. Mouthfeel: as you said, you want multiple flavors. But the satisfaction of a single piece of fruit in a bite-sized piece is also fantastic. Unfortunately, you would need to make them 1/4 bite or smaller to fit 4 or more different pieces into a bite.
@JustiReno oh I love making a chutney, but I don't consider it a "fruit salad". It's more of a topping or side to complement a dish, too flavorful to just eat a pure mouthful of it. But that's a great example of smaller diced or minced ingredients. Another would be certain salsas, such as a peach-mango habanero salsa I like to make. I like to keep the chunks of mango and peach somewhat larger (around 1-2 cm) rather than blend them all together into a homogenous sauce.
photo is not my salsa, but to give an idea of the size I'm talking about.
To get multiple fruits, you can use a larger spoon, or spear more with a fork. The fruits are cut to the sizes they are so that the stay firm, not mushy.
I cannot stand people chopping fruit. I wouldn’t eat fruit that someone has gone and peeled and chopped. I got goosebumps and hair on my arms stand just thinking about it while typing that. I’ll buy my fruit whole and do it all myself and most probably just eat them, not chop and make a fruit salad. I don’t like that stuff touching.
Read what I said again… I don’t like people cutting or touching my fruit. I however have no issues if I do it all, aka, peel and cut my own fruit but I don’t like different fruits touching
It grosses me out and I won’t eat it. This is a preference.
@OfDeath gotta say sometimes I agree. I almost always give the buffet style fruit salad a miss. It's just not appetizing all that fruit slopped together like that. I prefer whole. But I'm also down with salsa, chutney, and certain cut fruit if it's fresh enough. Fruit starts to oxidize immediately once cut.

am i with you? always. i would follow you in to the gates of Heck
HELL YEAH BROTHER!!!
Its more work, but more importantly if its smaller pieces there is more surface area to oxidize and the fruits become mushy more quickly. Larger pieces stay fresh longer.
If you make your own fruit salad you can chop it as fine as you want. Market products are chopped into bigger pieces because people want see fruits or want those fruit pieces as single snacks.
No, you see, this is where you're wrong. It will be soup if they are small.
@JustiReno well, doesn't seem lkke a terrible idea.
Some people like bigger chunks so they can still taste the individual fruits because small chunks absorbs each other's flavor and you won't get each of it's own particular taste. And it stays fresh longer.
I like bite-sized pieces. It doesn't matter to me either way.
I always assumed that was an aesthetic and texture thing.
Yes, I agree with you I like my fruit cut into smaller pieces.
Chop it to your desired size but not too small so it don't sort of melt cos of the water content is usually large
I agree, more work with the chopping, but I’m with you! 😄👍🏼
I guess it’s too time consuming for the people that prepare it
My complaint is why does fruit salads always got to have watermelon swimming in watermelon juice at the bottom. It's nasty!
Talking about fruit I need to start eating it more often
what's your favorite? Bananas are so easy to get, eat, and also cheap. I'm a big fan of the darker and berries like blue, black, rasp, straw. fruit is awesome.
Green Apples, they're good😅😅
Because then it'd be fruit juice
So make your own.
Hahaha
