What is it with earbuds?

I have two pairs, and for each pair, the one that goes in my right ear fits in the LEFT side of the case, and the one for my left ear goes in the RIGHT side of the case.

Anyone know why?

Doesn't left and right depend on which direction you are facing? Do you take the buds directly from the box straight to your head without turning them? Or is the "front" of the box supposed to represent the "front" of your face? In which case you'd have to turn them 180. Having worked in engineering, I know damn well they got in arguments about this, and marketing won.

As an ex carpenter this reminds me of ordering doors. They have left hand swing and right hand swing. Now if only I could remember if you view it from inside or outside the door.
